The Power of Psychatog!!!

I’m slowly going to start moving all the content from the CardBoardCrack page to the main site. The CBC page really doesn’t get used and I think it will be much simpler to create another section here for all that content. This is the first post on the main site that is related to Magic the Gathering, so you have missed anything; however if you could care less about Magic, then stop reading now. HAHAHA!!! Be looking for more updates soon.

“One of the most hideously powered creatures in MTG history. A creature I still see in my nightmares.”

This quote was taken from a widely used MTG message board, and it holds true to many veterans of the game. Psychatog is not a legendary creature, however he is one of those “legendary” cards that everyone remembers and knows. He has seen play in every major constructed format. There have been countless tournament-worthy decks build around him. So whether you’re a beginner or an old school magician you know or have seen this card before.

From the beginning of his printing players instantly fell in love with the power of this creature. Discard 2 cards, then remove those cards from the game, now and he’s a 4/5, crazy. He is a huge “enabler” for other mechanics. Madness cards, for example, were first a big part of this little guy. In recent years the dredge mechanic has become the most widely used combo with Psychatog, now producing more synergy then before. Psychatog works so well with many cool and interesting mechanics that he is independently great, because this causes him to be very versatile and also makes him easy to build a deck around.

Psychatog is very fluid, he has a low mana cost that is combined with a wide variety of lands to make him playable. He disables many cards that might be played against you, “Haunting Echoes, Dark Banishing, Shock, or any other direct damage won't work on him. He can take down almost any creature in combat at just the cost of a couple of cards. He's uncommon, and therefore, not all that hard to get your hands on. All in all he is a wonderful addition to many decks.

I know what you might be asking yourself and the answer is, YES! Psychatog is broken, but having broken cards are all part of the fun, and what makes MTG the wonderful game that it is.

The Top 100 Magic the Gathering Cards of All Time

I want to try and build a list of the top 100 cards of the entire game. What are the most game-breaking, versatile, consistent and most powerfull magic cards of all?

Each suggestion period will last for 2 weeks. At the end of each period I will rate all the the cards that were suggested and add the top 10 of those to the list. So please check back and see if yours made it.
Please send me an email suggesting your top 10 cards for the period. Also please check the current list posted here before you summit any cards. As some of them may already be added.
The first suggestion period will start on June 6 until the 17th, for positions 1 - 10. I will send you a confirmation when I recieve your email.

The Rules:

  1. This is a best of list, not a favorite card poll. Do not suggest cards because you like them more than others, or because you think they’re cooler. If that was the case I'd mark Basking Rootwalla as #1.
  2. Please try to explain your choices and give examples of game play if at all possible.
  3. Try and ask yourself questions about the card before you summit:
-When it was legal, did this card see massive play in each of its formats?
-Did it inspire an "instant include" tag to it, regardless of the deck it's going into?
-Is the card still highly regarded and revered as a threat?
-Would this card warrant an instant restriction because of a quick-kill tendency?
-Has this card spurred its own archetypes thanks to the synergy it has with other cards that are best in combination with it?
-Can it sustain itself on its own without the need for another card or combo?
-Is the ability unique in itself where there have been many attempts at "dumbing it down" or "weakening" the same effect?
  4. While Vintage and Legacy are the best formats, try to move out of that realm. Some cards that are played in other formats can also be defining.
  5. Also, try not to just look on the banned or restricted cards to often. While, most of the best cards are on there, it is just a list made by people’s opinions on the game, plus some of the best cards are not even on there. Take Force of Will and Swords to Plowshares for example. So no “this card is better because it is on the restriction-list” arguments please!
  6. Yes, this is the Top 100 EVER. Ever means that you may suggest Juzam Djinn, the power house in its day but not played often anymore. This is just a rough example, but it means that this top 100-list not neccesarely has to become the Top 100 best Magic cards. Expect critique though if you suggest out of flavor cards.

The Way it Goes:

Suggest a group of 10 cards you think are the best.
Put the cards in order for 1 to 10. With the best card at 1 and the least best card at 10.
I will rate the cards and after that the 10 cards with the best results will be added every two weeks until the Top 100 list is complete, we will continue like this in groups of 10 cards at the time until we hit 100.
After that there will be a 1 month re-order period were everyone may reorder the top 100 and email me there suggested changes.
I will email eveyone sent suggestions or changes once the final list is composed.

Exceptions on suggestions:

  1. If you suggest for 1 Mox, you suggest for them all. Having 3 or 4 different Mox-cards in the Greatest-Top 100 Ever is a waste of space. Moxen are going to take place at one position in the list, period. Same for Dual Lands, Fetch-lands, etc.
  2. Only suggest tournament-legal cards: no ante-cards and no Unglued and other Un-sets are allowed. Everyone knows by now Portal/Starter-sets are legal.
  3. Suggesting is your choice, but let’s make this a good and representative list for beginners as well. So no “Sol Ring is better then Black Lotus” or “Spiritmonger is the best creature in the game”. State the facts most of the time and explain your choice.
  4. No suggestions for basic lands.

Best of luck to all!!!

Combos

Phyrexian Millnought

With Altar of Dementia in play. Cast Phyrexian Dreadnought. When Dreadnought hits play, ability activates. In response, sac it to Altar of Dementia, they mill top 12. Then tap Academy Ruins at EOT to repeat. Total mana needed is {2}{B}.

Flowstone Charger

I have been playing with the idea to create a deck based around Flowstone Charger. I've looked online but haven't found any decks that I'm fond of.

One idea is to create a deck with the Charger and Dwarven Warriors. This combo would make the Charger unblokable, so you would then have a 5/2 that cannot be blocked. But this really is not a very good win condition.

Permanant Destroyer

Sunken Hope, Possessed Portal, and Basking Rootwalla: With all cards in play, at the beginning of each turn you can return the Rootwalla to your hand with Sunken Hope. Then at the EOT you discard the Rootwalla to Possessed Portal and play it for its madness cost. Ready to be returned by Sunken Hope on your next upkeep. While other players will be sacfificing a permanent each turn. Be sure to have draw power as the Portal will keep you from drawing.

Infinite Creatures or Kill

Ashnod's Altar, Disciple of the Vault, Genesis Chamber, Myr Retriever, Hell's Caretaker, and Intruder Alarm: Genesis Chamber played first, then play Hell's Caretaker. Spawn 1 myr creature token and sacrifice it to bring a creature from your graveyard into play, in turn spawning another myr to sacrifice. Myr quickly grow up to be your worst nightmare.

Then you can use the Ashnod's Altar, Disciple of the Vault, and Myr Retriever to have your opponent lose life.

Eaten by the Swamp

Sleight of Mind, Mind Bend, Karma, Angry Mob, and Stern Judge: First play Stern Judge and Angry Mob, then at the EOT use Sleight of Mind and Mind Bend to change your opponents lands to swamps. Then at the beginning of your opponents upkeep they will take damage from Karma. On your next turn tap Stern Judge to deal direct damage to your opponent(s). Then attack with Angry Mob which grows with each land you convert.

Infinite Mana

Myr Galvanizer and Palladium Myr: You must have 2 Galvanizers in play. First tap Palladium to add 2 to your mana pool. Next tap Galvanizer number 1 to untap the Palladium. "1 mana floating". Then tap the Palladium again for 2 more mana. "3 mana floating". Then tap Galvanizer number 2 to untap all other Myrs. "2 mana floating". And then repeat for infinite mana.

Whipping Myr

Ichorclaw Myr, Livewire Lash, and Gigadrowse: Equip the Ichorclaw Myr with Livewire Lash and then cast Gigadrowse replicating for as many blue mana as you have (5 is nice). For each replication it gives your opponent 2 poison counters. Has the potential for a turn 5 kill in mono blue!

Infinite Elves

Citanul Hierophants, Rhys the Redeemed, and Intruder Alarm: Have all 3 cards in play along with at least 4{G}. Tap 3{G} and tap Rhys the Redeemed to put a token into play. All creatures untap. Tap 1{G}, the token, and the Citanul Hierophants and then tap Rhys the Redeemed to put another token into play. All creatures untap. Tap the tokens and the Hierophants and use Rhys' ability again. Eventually, you will have enough tokens to use Rhys' second ability if you so desire.

Infinite creatures

Grand Architect, Mycosynth Lattice, and Patrol Signaler: First make patrol signaler blue. Tap it to add 2 mana. Use the 2 colourless mana to untap it to create a kithkin token.(Mycosynth Lattice allows the mana to be used as white as well.)

Repeat for infinite.

New Turn 2 Kill

Tireless Tribe and Twisted Image: Don't rate originality. This is a new take on an old favorite using Transmutation but better, since it uses friendly colors, costs less and even draws a card.

Play Tireless Tribe turn 1. Turn 2 discard 5 cards to the tribe and cast Twisted Image for the win if there are no blockers.

Invulnerable

Pariah and Cho-Manno, Revolutionary: When played well, Pariah can act like both a Holy Day and a Terror. How? Enchant your opponent’s biggest attacker with it. As long as that creature remains in play, all damage that would be dealt to you is dealt to that creature instead. Your opponent will most likely have to stage an attack just to deal enough damage to kill his or her own creature and get the Pariah off the table!

When played extremely well, Pariah can make you completely immune to damage for the rest of the game. How? Enchant your own Cho-Manno, Revolutionary. All damage that would be dealt to you is dealt to Cho-Manno instead ... and all damage that would be dealt to Cho-Manno is prevented. Congratulations, you’re invulnerable!

Kill Blocker

Sylvan Basilisk and Lure: Back in Alpha (the first Magic set), one of the deadliest combos available was Thicket Basilisk enchanted by Lure. Lure would force all opposing creatures that were able to block Thicket Basilisk to do so, and Thicket Basilisk would destroy all those creatures (except Walls) at end of combat. Thicket Basilisk would often be destroyed as well since it would probably be dealt lethal combat damage, but it certainly did its job.

Swap Basilisks, and the combo gets even more ridiculous. Sylvan Basilisk destroys each creature that blocks it (including Walls) at the time it gets blocked. This is before those creatures deal combat damage, so Sylvan Basilisk will live through the assault, ready to clear out all blockers turn after turn after turn!

Psychatog Dredge

The name tells the story. You want to play Gifts Ungiven as soon as possible to get Genesis, Stinkweed Imp, Wonder, and Psychatog. No matter what you're opponent chooses to put into you're hand or graveyard you're golden from this point. You can use Genesis to retreive the Psychatog. Once Psychatog is on the board all you have to do now is to Drege away with the Imp. It's that simple. Have fun.
