Wireless ElectricityAugust 28, 2009 at 12:07 amWireless electricity demo: Eric Giler on TED.com Eric Giler wants to untangle our wired lives with cable-free electric power. Here, he covers what this sci-fi tech offers, and demos MIT’s breakthrough version, WiTricity — a near-to-market invention that may soon recharge your cell phone, car, pacemaker.(Recorded at TEDGlobal 2009, July 2009 in Oxford, UK. Duration: 10:10) http://blog.ted.com/2009/08/wireless_electr.php Your Hard DriveAugust 26, 2008 at 8:19 pmAt the time when we are born our mind is like a blank computer hard drive. We lack any knowledge or understanding of the world around us. We have an operating system installed that gives us the very basic of motor functions. We eat, we sleep, and we produce waste. That is all we are really good for. In keeping with this concept that our minds are so similar to that of a computer hard drive. I want to elaborate on the idea of people developing and learning to the point were they develop a belief system, which is called faith. Weather you believe in God, evolution, or absolutely nothing at all, you have a foundation of faith that your belief is built on. A computer cannot get smarter and cannot learn from its mistakes (yet). But a computer can become more advanced. Just like your mind. Faith as describe in Hebrews is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. “Being sure of what we hope for.” This means a person has the understanding that whatever truths they hold to be true, whatever ideas they have in their mind, whatever strengths they seem to possess, they hold all of these things so close to them that they would be willing to put their life on the line, if need be. “Certain of what we do not see.” This is the strength of mankind’s best and worst decisions. These two examples show us that if a person believes in something strong enough that they will find a solution. In 1922 Einstein was certain that relativity existed, thus awarded him the 1921 Nobel Prize in Physics, for his services to Theoretical Physics, and especially for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect. Leo Szilard was certain and conceived of the possibility of a controlled release of atomic power through a multiplying neutron chain reaction, and also realized that if such a reaction could be found, then a bomb could be built using it. Robert Oppenheimer known as the Father of the Atomic Bomb. He said this after that bomb was built and used. He looked to his peers with saddened tears in his eyes and said, “I am become Death.” Many things can be accomplished with a strong belief in something. People can go far beyond what is thought possible if they believe in it. Paul had an amazing faith. A faith so strong that he hunted and killed countless Christians, because he believed that is what he was supposed to do. His belief was so strong it took God talking to him to open his eyes and turn him away from that belief. There are so many bad things we can read, or watch, or partake in. Once we have experienced something it is forever in our memory, good or bad, just like installing a piece of software on a computer hard drive. My question to you is, What software are you going to install on your hard drive? Are you going to drop your firewall and say anything is ok? Are you going to set the bar on what is right and choose to do that whatever the cost? This is where that strong belief system comes into play. Being sure and certain of what God wants will help you keep your defense and stay on the right path. Your MommaAugust 26, 2008 at 8:18 pmA brief history of Your Momma, thought this was funny!!! Historic usage: Although this may appear to be a recent phenomenon, one can find variants in classical literature. William Shakespeare used such a device in Act I Scene 1 of Timon of Athens: The Life of Timon of Athens Painter: “Y’are a dog.” Apemantus: “Thy mother’s of my generation. What’s she, if I be a dog?” Also in Act IV, Scene II of Titus Andronicus, Aaron taunts his lover’s sons: Titus Andronicus Demetrius: “Villain, what hast thou done?” Aaron: “That which thou canst not undo.” Chiron: “Thou hast undone our mother.” Aaron: “Villain, I have done thy mother.” In popular culture “Your mother” jokes became common in North American pop culture in the early nineties. The Pharcyde’s 1992 track “Ya Mama” echoed it. Mexican film Y Tu Mama Tambien’s title is an equivalent usage in Spanish (“and your mother too”). There is also a television show Yo Momma (TV series) featuring contestants “playing the dozens”. The Australian hiphop outfit Butterfingers released a song called “Yo Mama” that made number 17 on the 2004 Triple J Hottest 100. In the early nineties, British comedy duo Newman and Baddiel of The Mary Whitehouse Experience added an extra layer of irony to the mother insult by using it extensively in their “History Today” routines in which two restrained elderly university professors debate history seriously until breaking into childish insults, often using the format “See that _______? That’s your Momma.” Fortune CookieAugust 13, 2009 at 2:47 pmOne of the greatest discoveries is that a human being can alter his life by altering his attitudes of mind. Ralph Waldo Emerson: Self-Reliance (1841)July 6, 2009 at 10:30 pmThere is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance, that imitation is suicide. That he must take himself for better or worse as his portion… What I must do is all that concerns me, not what people think. This rule equally arduous in actual and intellectual life may serve for the whole distinction between greatness and meanness. It is the harder because you will always find those who think they know what is your duty better than you know it. It is easy in the world to live after the world’s opinion; it is easy in solitude to live after our own. But the great man is he who in the midst of the crowd keeps with perfect sweetness the independence of solitude. Natural ProgressionJune 16, 2009 at 11:31 pmI was held up by an elderly woman walking in front of me as I was coming out of Wal-Mart. I was doing the best job I could not to crowd her and to make sure everything goes smoothly for her from the store to her car. After watching her for a little while, I saw a young boy running in the parking lot. I think to myself “where o where is this child’s parents?” The old lady stops very suddenly and grabs her basket to keep form hitting the little boy. I am sure it took all her strength to stop the full basket. After the boy goes by she takes a long deep breath and slowly continues on her way, eventually making it to her car. I see her husband waiting there help her with the groceries. Again I think to myself “Why was he not there to help her across the parking lot?” Because as far as I could tell he was in good health. I stand there thinking how a person’s perception changes throughout their lifetime. For example, at that moment I was most concerned with the well being of the elderly woman. She on the other hand was most concerned with getting through the parking lot. The little boy had no concern at all, other than to scare the old woman and in turn make me very worried for her. This is the natural progression in life where you go from being self serving to serving others, then in time back to self serving. But when you come full circle back to self serving it is now different. You're now serving yourself in a different way then before. You are trying to keep yourself healthy and safe and not for personal gain as when you were younger. In my adolescents I once asked an elderly man what his biggest hobby was. His reply was “Going to the Doctor.” I am so thankful for the people that watch over me. To guide, protect, give me advice, and to make sure that I treat others the same way. The love and care you receive from your friends and family can be one of the greatest blessing’s any person can have. With that said, I want you to know that you will always have mine! Free Money What???June 10, 2009 at 8:52 pmWe hear stories of people finding money on the street, or in the sand at a beach, or at a park in the grass, and most times it’s not a great amount. But people are happy what ever the case may be, whether its 5 cents or 5 dollars, finding money is great. This past Sunday I was at a gas station putting gas in my car. As I went into pay I saw a thin green line on the concrete. I looked around for a minute to see if there was anyone else around me who might have dropped what I was about to pick up. I then made my way over to the small green stripe on the ground. I bent down and picked it up. I put it in my pocket and went into the station to pay. As I stood in line I slowly reach into my pocket and pull out the green paper. It was folded into a small flat rectangle and I can’t tell what the dollar amount is. I un-wrapped the paper to find that it is a 100 dollar bill. What the mess! This is crazy; I have never found or heard of someone finding something like that. I put in back in my pocket paid for my gas and headed home. Man what a day!!! EarthJune 8, 2009 at 10:51 pmWhen you stand in the checkout line at a grocery store, have you ever stopped and looked at all the resources it takes to fill all the baskets that all the people in the world need? There is a great deal of paper, plastic, metal, oil, gas, and other natural resources used to fill and create a working grocery store. This idea is excluding the fact that there are thousands and thousands of grocery stores all over the world. With a great majority of those stores being located in the United States. We are using the world’s resources at a geometric rate and I fear that someday soon it is going to catch up with us. Even though I know this planet is self sustaining. I often ask myself what was Gods plan when he made “this or that?” Why are people are “this way or that way?” But God in his infinite knowledge made us and the planet so perfect. I have the faith that mankind will survive until he comes back. That is the plan and so that is how it must happen. But this concern for mankind still remains, how long are we going to survive in this state? Are we killing the planet? How much longer is the sun going to burn? These are all questions mankind has been trying to answer. There will be hardships in the future just as there has been in the past. Empires fall and drought and famine cover the land. No matter how advanced science and technology becomes. I do believe that science and technology can make these hardships easier. We can discover and create new ways of recycling, and new methods for creating transportation and energy. But we will still have to endure. We have to be aware of these things and to do the best we can with it. Not to waste things we have, to be more resourceful, and to help everyone we come in contact with. Because in the end all will have are each other! Little Boy and the WaitressMay 8, 2009 at 8:49 pmOnce there was a little boy that went to an ice-cream store. The little boy sat down at a booth waiting patiently for a waitress to come and take his order. After a great deal of time, a waitress came over to the table and in a very stern and firm voice asked “WHAT DO YOU WANT!” The little boy reached down into his pocket and pulled out some change and placed it on the table. The little boy then looked up to the waitress and said, “How much is a Chocolate Sunday?” The waitress then very quickly and with a snap of her voice said, “A DOLLAR FIFTY!” The little boy looked down at his change and began to count it. After a few minutes the little boy looked up to the waitress and asked, “How much is a small cup of chocolate ice-cream?” The waitress then made a long sigh and in a stronger and firmer voice then before said, “ONE DOLLAR!” The little boy looked down again and counted his money for a second time. The little boy then slid a dollar in change across the table to the waitress. The waitress reached down and took his money. After 10 minutes or so the waitress returned with a small cup of chocolate ice-cream. The little boy said, “Thank You!” and began to eat. The little boy sat at the booth eating his ice-cream, enjoying each and every bite. Once the little boy had finished, he got up from the booth and headed to the door. The little boy stopped and told the waitress, “Thank You!” a second time then left. The waitress then headed over to the booth to clean up. When she came to the booth she noticed that there were 2 quarters next to the empty cup. The waitress was over whelmed; she had been so rude and short with the little boy. Yet the little boy still showed her the compassion and care that he knew was right. She then slowly put the 2 quarters in her pocket, and walked from the booth saddened and disappointed with her self. The waitress from that day always kept 2 quarters in her pocket, to remind her of the little boy and the compassion he showed her. ParenthoodApril 2, 2009 at 8:12 pmSitting in church after service, as I often do, and looking to see who is there and who is not. I find myself staring at a man talking to his son. His son is grown and married and so I think what that must be like. To have a child and watch him or her grow. To know this child better then anyone else ever could. You raised it and you were there when the new mind was struggling to get a grasp on life and gain the awareness of right and wrong. Now the child that you knew so well is on their own and in your child’s mind, it has grown to a place very similar to yours. In thought and deed, and maybe even to the point of surpassing what you know or understand about the world. Of course you as a parent will always have the upper hand because you have been alive on this planet a great deal longer. But their understanding and knowledge of things throughout their life will still amaze you. I often wonder when I come to making a decision to have a child, if I will want to. I have always known that I want to have children. But the fact is that once you make that decision to have a child, you not only have made a living person but also a living soul. A soul that will one day be in front of God on judgment. So that fear gets at you. That if you have a child, and after this child is born that it will become the one thing you love and care for more than any other living thing. Will some day end up where you may not want it to be, makes that choice to have a child hard. I am certain that I will have children and I will do everything in my power to make sure they know the word and stay faithful all the days of their life. I will do the best I can as a father and I pray God will give me help and peace when that time comes. So as I sit there looking at this man talking to his son, I wonder how I will feel when I am in that place, when I will be able to stand and see my child grown, married and ready to have a child of their own. What a great and amazing feeling that must be. Math Homework 911 CallMarch 8, 2009 at 12:11 amA boy calls 911 to get help with is math homework. Quote Operator: 911 emergencies. Here is the Link :: http://digg.com/d1o0qb The Screaming AlarmFebruary 12, 2009 at 12:38 amAs long as I can remember and up until I was around 20 I had an alarm clock that would wake me up every morning with a horrible buzzing sound. I eventually gave it to someone else, so that they may enjoy it as mush as I did. SO the day begins… I am asleep in my bed and for some reason dreaming about the time when I was living at my mothers house and feeling like I am back in high school. I can’t tell you all the ends and outs of the dream but it was not as bad as you might think. The dream by no measure deserves to be classified as a nightmare, but it was a little discomforting being back at home and in high school. I do remember getting home from school and going about my day as if it were any other day. Then I remember dreaming about getting ready for bed and then going to sleep. So now I am at the point where I am asleep and dreaming that I am asleep. It was ever so peaceful… THEN IT CAME… It came at me like a memory of a wound that once caused pain. The memory came like a bad sun burn you had forgotten about while sleeping until you rolled over and rubbed it against the sheets and now caused the once subdued burning feeling to rise like a mountain. Burn……Burn……BURN……BURN. Over and over again, until you wake up in pain and cry towards the heavens for relief. That is what this lost memory felt like. What was this memory you ask. It was the once forgotten alarm clock, now singing with all the volume in the world. At first I remember waking up in my dream and reaching over to the near by window sill to turn it off. But then the oddest thing happened. The moment I turned it off in my dream it came right back on. I even remember pulling the cord out of the wall and still nothing. It still made the horrible buzzing sound that I so hated. I was helpless to make this noise stop. This dream had now turned into a nightmare. A nightmare with no end. Until I realized that I was dreaming. I told myself to wake up. Wake up Daniel, Wake up now!!! I woke up and began to lift my head off of my pillow. Then it happens. Then sound is back. But how? And why? Where is it coming from? I am awake? How can this be? The sound has followed me from the dream world to this world. Am I going mad? Has this sound some how been imprinted on to my brain and now is slowly driving me insane? After I calmed down and tried and look at this with some reasoning I came to find out that the sound is not in my head but coming from inside the house. Now it is all clear. Paul. Paul and his horrible alarm clock. For those of you that do not know Paul has an alarm clock identical to the one I had previously. And this particular morning Paul has decide to leave it going. To make it better he is not asleep in his room. He has fallen asleep in the living room. So I lay back down and tell myself if he can handle sleeping through that crap then I can. This is no longer about stopping some horrible noise. It is now an endurance contest. Who will turn off the clock first? BUZZ….BUZZ…. BUZZ…. BUZZ…. BUZZ…. BUZZ…. BUZZ…. BUZZ…. Over and over, for 15 minutes this goes on, and I keep thinking to myself that the alarm has a self timer and will soon stop. But it doesn’t. So I choose another tactic. I reach over and grab my phone. If I know Paul and I do. He will have his phone some where next to where he is sleeping. I call him and he doesn’t answer. I call him again and this time I hear, “helllooo”. (In a sleepy voice.) “Hey man, your alarm has been going off for about 15 minutes or so, were you planning on turning it off?” I said, “O really, I can’t hear it.” At that point I just hung up the phone. Then I heard Paul go into his room and turn it off. What a way to start the day. But this does make of a great addition to the blog that is my life. Stay tuned.
